So, erm, don't use Microsoft XML Notepad 2007.Updated for Windows 10, version 1903, 1909, and 2004. Without HTML-kid I would have been completely lost in discovering this. Importing into either of them and saving kept the three characters that caused FlightGear to freeze. Now the (probably not so) odd thing is, Notepad or Wordpad did not show those characters. Removing those characters and saving again unfroze FlightGear. I used HTML-kid (292-Chami) to open the file to discover three non-utf8 characters at the beginning of the file. It took me some time to discover it was not my modifications that caused the freeze-over. Looked great! Saved the changes and fired up FlightGear, it completely froze. Naturally I opened up a recently modified file (sound.xml) and worked on it to see the formatting. Though I'd find me a xml editor and found Miscosoft XML Notepad 2007. On a windows machine 'm using Notepad and Wordpad to edit xml's.
